Meet Kathy Deaton
Kathy Deaton first opened up her quilting business over 20 years ago in Mackenzie, BC. She had always wanted to have a fabric business and loved to teach classes in sewing and quilting. “I enjoy watching people learn a new hobby and realize they can make beautiful quilts for loved ones,” she says.
For Kathy, small town business is more like friends coming to visit. “Many people come and spend the day visiting and sewing,” she says. “In a smaller town, you get to know your customers. You see them often and watch their children grow.”
Kathy is fond of Prince George and says the city has ample opportunity to keep busy. “Prince George is a great city with lots to do, it has most anything a person could want and the outdoor activities are endless,” she explains.
With a continued commitment to better the place she calls home, Kathy and her team at Kathy’s Quilt Shop regularly give back to the community. “We teach classes where in lieu of class fees, we ask for a donation in grocery gift cards. We then use these cards to purchase items for people in need. We sponsored two seniors in “Elves for Elders” at Christmas and we’ve helped people that were in crisis after a job loss purchase food for meals. We’ve donated quilts to Victims Services and over 40 quilts to the Immigrant and Multicultural Services Society (IMSS) for the Syrian refugees," she explains. “I also taught a quick sewing class at IMSS for new immigrants.”
Kathy admits that she hasn’t really noticed a change in the city regarding small business but is optimistic about their success. “The future of small business should be bright as the small business usually provides something unique that the big box stores don’t have,” she says.
