Meet Darlene Shatford & Alanna Siemens
Yarn aficionados Darlene Shatford and Alanna Siemens had a dream of uniting the knitters and crocheters of Prince George through their mutual love of the art. They also believed that they needed better and more inspiring options to spark their creativity. "From the beginning it has been our goal to provide Prince George with a big city yarn shop," says Darlene, "an outstanding selection and service with class." The business partners left no detail unattended to, from their hip and cozy little shop to the massive selection of colours, styles and brands of yarn, to the way that they would reach out to the knitters and crocheters.
Since opening in 2010, Top Drawer has created a yarn community within its four walls. Darlene and Alanna have offered all kinds of unique ways for people to connect over their craft, from special theme nights like "Knit Flix" (knitting and a movie) to dedicated groups for new moms and "golden girls." They've even sponsored knitting for a cause with their "Purple Baby Hats" to support the hospital. Says Alanna, "We feel we are outrageously successful. In our first four years, we have accomplished what we set out to do and more. You can buy fabulous yarn right here in Prince George in a jazzy setting. Our feedback from customers, not just in Prince George but throughout the province, has been outstanding, especially in regards to our quality, quantity, service, and selection. "
Darlene and Alanna are thrilled to be a part of the downtown scene and its vibrant atmosphere. There is always something happening and always people to talk to. "I enjoy bumping into people who share our sense of community and are creative in their own businesses as well," says Darlene.
